High Tea is a popular way to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday, wedding, christening, naming day, baby shower or hen’s day.
Chit chat has it that High Tea started in the Victorian era, when lunch was a smallish affair and dinner was served very late into the evening. As a result, every day around 4.00pm the streets of London would be filled with strange noises – the rumbling bellies of upper class Brits (so embarrassing). To remedy this awkward situation, the Duchess of Bedford, who was for a time a lady-in-waiting for Queen Victoria, created ‘afternoon tea’ or High Tea as we know it. A light meal filled the gap between lunch and dinner, consisting of tea and cake or sandwiches. The Duchess soon began inviting her friends to join her for afternoon tea and it was, of course, an instant hit.
